Smart cooling for a smart company… Clean Air and the QAD230 evaporative cooler prove the perfect answer to cool premises at Paxton.
The search for a suitable HVAC contractor began at the Facilities Show. Here Paxton met with Clean Air. They were impressed. Like Paxton, Clean Air have over 30 years experience and a commitment to unrivalled technical and post sale support. Visits to previous installations followed and Paxton were able to see, first hand, how expert design, considered specification and skilled installation combine to deliver outstanding cooling results.
An important first step is the identification of hot or cold spots. Potential problem areas were considered. For example high storage areas, or the packing, loading and return bays. Also factors that can influence temperature such as doors and windows.
Clean Air quickly got to work, scheduling the installation around the needs of Paxton to help minimise disturbance and avoid downtime in production. For their economy, powerful cooling capability and strong green credentials the natural choice was the evaporative cooler. Four were duly installed, each unit able to reduce the temperature of 360 square metres; by up to 16 degrees C. Hexagonal plenums were used to evenly distribute the chilled air to the factory floor of around 1000 square metres.
Finally to ensure that the newly introduced fresh and filtered cool air continually circulates the workplace, vents were strategically placed in the roof to expel the rising hot air. Commitment to health and safety was high. The factory has high ceilings and a double lift was required, not an issue for Clean Air engineers who have full ‘Working at Heights’ training.
The ultimate test came with the summer heatwave that followed shortly after the evaporative coolers were installed. Temperatures regularly exceeded 30 degrees C, but that was no problem for our Cool Breeze units!
You feel it immediately as you walk onto the floor of the factory. The atmosphere is transformed.
We took great care to choose the right contractor. Thank you we look forward to working with you again
Tom Saunders, Facilities Manager, Paxton Access Ltd.
Quickly proving their worth, staff were able to work on in air conditioned bliss. Given that the evap cooling units are designed and manufactured in Australia – where such extreme high temperatures are the norm – perhaps we should not be surprised.
Now even for a smart company like Paxton, that’s clever cooling!
Effective, reliable and economical temperature control are prerequisites for pharmaceutical storage. Clean Air deliver just this at Lexon’s distribution centre in Redditch.
Lexon are one of the largest independent pharmaceutical wholesalers in the UK. Providing a catalogue of over 8000 products to more than 3000 pharmacies requires large distribution hubs that have to maintain temperature below a set point in order to comply with Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) guidelines. Whilst the existing extraction system removed heat from the building, it was now time for an upgrade. A system that would be reliable, economical and able to cope in a heatwave.
With a warehouse of over 7000 square metres to cool and such exacting requirements, the choice of contractor and plant was critical. Fortunately the right heating, ventilation and air conditioning contractor were soon identified by Lexon who, after speaking with a satisfied customer in the same industry, and then seeing the product in action, quickly set our engineers to designing a cooling system to meet their brief. An order duly followed and the job was under way.
An important first step is the identification of hot or cold spots. Potential problem areas were considered. For example high storage areas, or the packing, loading and return bays. Also factors that can influence temperature such as doors and windows.
Twenty nine CoolBreeze QAD230 evaporative coolers were the prescription. The units introduce fresh, filtered, cool air into the building, bringing temperatures within MHRA guidelines. The racking at high levels received our particular attention. A continual flow of cool air is pushed along each aisle while carefully balanced ducts provide even distribution. Extra roof vents then expel the hot stale air.
I would not hesitate to recommend Clean Air. Their engineers have the highest standards of workmanship and proved willing to go the extra mile on what was a complex job
Yogesh Patel, Lexon UK
During the design, alternative air conditioning technologies were considered. They too could have maintained the temperature in the building. However, they were expensive to install and prohibitively costly to run. For a building this size nothing else comes close to evaporative cooling. As water is the principle means of cooling, no CFC’s are required and so average running costs – for an 8 hour shift – begin at just £1 a day. The results are big energy savings, vastly lower bills and superb carbon credentials.
The first result was an early one. The Lexon premises are a busy and complex distribution hub. Clean Air met the challenge and completed the installation with minimal disruption to daily operations. However it was shortly afterwards, during the summer of 2018, that the 29 units established their true worth. Despite sweltering highs in excess of 30 degrees centigrade outside, the temperatures inside remained within MHRA tolerances. As an exemplar in how to cool a pharmaceutical warehouse, Clean Air are justifiably proud of this installation. Lexon too share in our delight. We now maintain and service all of the units we installed and our relationship with Lexon continues to thrive.
As well as it’s very low running and capital costs, Evaporative Cooling is a remarkably flexible means of cooling a warehouse, factory, office, shop, sports hall or server room. Any number of units can be linked or independently controlled to provide individual cooling to specific areas.
Chesapeake is an international supplier of innovative cartons and plastic packaging, labels and leaflets. The machining area for plastic bottling was becoming uncomfortably heated and Chesapeake wanted an alternative to the solution that had been proposed – a ventilation only system quoted at around £100K. After seeing Clean Air’s website, it’s design engineers were invited to quote on a solution which involved evaporative cooling.
The answer came in the form of seven Cool Breeze QAD230 units to be installed through the centre of the factory that formed individually controlled cooling zones over the operational area.
The results are impressive, cool fresh air is continually circulated and polluted heated air expelled. Just one unit can lower the internal temperature of 360m2 by up to 16 degrees C, and so it came as no surprise that Chesapeake report that the reach of the cooling has surpassed expectations.
Furthermore, despite a challenging installation where the landlord would not allow penetration of the recently reclad roof, the complete solution has been delivered at around half the cost of an alternative ‘ventilation only’ quote from the competition.
Chesapeake have now asked Clean Air to look at their office cooling.
By far the majority of our new installations are a result of repeat business or client recommendation, at last count around 80%.
This was the case for John Crane, who began their relationship with Clean Air upon the recommendation of another.
It was our client Hewland Engineering that recommended us to John Crane, a leading company that provides engineered products and services to a range of industries, including oil, gas, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. That introduction marked he beginning of a fruitful partnership.
The winners of the 2006 Queens Award for Enterprise, John Crane is part of the global engineering business Smiths Group, which employ about 22,000 people in over 50 countries. The company called on our expertise to lower temperatures in its stores and machining areas. Just four weeks later, twelve Cool Breeze QAD230 units had been fitted, alongside a pair of extractor fans that compliment the existing passive roof ventilation units. Each Cool Breeze unit is individually controlled to provide different temperature zones between the areas
Now staff enjoy a cool work environment and benefit from the natural fresh air that is continually introduced and circulated around the factory floor. In fact, so effective was our system that John Crane soon realised that the factory had become a more comfortable environment than the large open-plan offices.
Now, as another happy Clean Air client, John Crane will be able to provide the same reassurance to our new prospective customers.
The offices were being cooled by an old water chiller that supplied numerous indoor fan coils. Like many air-conditioning units predating 2002, it used R22 as its refrigerant. That posed a problem, because virgin R22 is now prohibited for servicing or maintenance. Another problem was reliability: regular breakdowns were causing high running and maintenance costs.
Having visited another Clean Air installation at Scantech, John Crane accepted our recommendation to install evaporative cooling in the offices. Soon four Cool Breeze QAD230 units had transformed the workplace. Cool, fresh air is now delivered through flexible spiral ducting that terminates in numerous grilles within the suspended ceiling throughout the office. Not only have we achieved contented staff and a comfortable working environment, we have helped John Crane to make energy savings of up to 80% and to lower maintenance costs — an important contribution to meeting the company’s environmental targets.
A vital room that required attention next was the large server room at John Crane. The air-conditioning system needed updating. A design incorporating Cool Breeze evaporative cooling system promised the necessary reliability necessary for a close control environment, but also a cost-effective means of cooling what is a large area.
John Crane took the time to view other heating and cooling installations by Clean Air to ensure that we were right HVAC contractor for the job. Something we are always happy to arrange for a prospective client.
Now, as another happy Clean Air client, John Crane will be able to provide the same reassurance and confidence to our new prospective customers.
Clean Air have probably installed more evaporative coolers than any other HVAC company in the UK. This means that no matter what the evap cooling system size or application we will have the experience to ensure that it does the job that you require efficiently, effectively and reliably.
Dormer Tools is one of the world’s largest producers of high-speed steel cutting tools. When its Managing Director, Terry Allison, asked us to undertake a site survey at the company’s premises in East Sussex, we calculated that 22 coolers would be needed to provide evaporative cooling throughout the 5,000 square-metre production facility.
The factory has two main areas, one dedicated to grinding machinery and the other to heat treatment, where summer temperatures regularly exceeded 30°C despite the installation of roof vents and fresh air fans.
After an initial trial with a single cooler in the heat treatment area, Clean Air installed six more evaporative cooling units with strategically placed internal vents to inject fresh, cooled area to the hot spots around the furnaces. And then 15 more to cover the whole of the production facility. Dormer Tools is delighted with the results, and so are we.
The evaporative cooling system has reduced temperatures in the heat treatment plant by around 8°C to 10°C’.
It has made a tremendous difference to our workforce; now the rest of the workers are asking when their area can be fitted with the units.
Martin Monaghan, Project Engineer, Dormer Tools
Providing cooling for workers in industrial environments to improve productivity and reduce absenteeism from heat stress has previously been perceived as financially prohibitive.
But now many companies are turning to evaporative cooling because they see that it really does provide a cost-effective solution for cooling large areas.
Marie Wren, M.D., Clean Air Group
Clean Air were one of the first companies to introduce evaporative cooling to the UK. The rest is history. This technology is now firmly established as the most sensible and economical way to cool large open spaces like a warehouse or factory floor. In many cases it is also suitable for offices and close temperature controlled spaces like server rooms.
Technicut Ltd, a UK market leader in the design, manufacture and supply of specialist rotary cutting tools, found that evaporative cooling was a genuinely cost-effective answer to its problems with soaring temperatures. Since Clean Air fitted the latest evaporative cooling technology at Technicut’s manufacturing facilities in Sheffield, summer temperatures in the machine shop have been reduced from a sweltering 32°C-plus to a comfortable 26°C.
We relied on opening doors and windows and using fans to create air movement. Even so, temperatures were unbearably hot and employees regularly complained. But since Clean Air installed the coolers we have seen a drop of between 6°C and 8°C, which has drastically improved conditions.
Peter Nield, Production Manager, Technicut
In fact, so successful has the cooling been that the company aked for three additional coolers for other, less fiery, areas. In each area, roof-mounted evaporative coolers distribute a constant flow of naturally cooled air via strategically placed internal vents, targeting cooling precisely where it is needed. Programmable regulators use four different modes to control temperatures.
Technicut has a policy of integrating health, safety and environmental considerations into all aspects of its business.
Although Technicut’s primary concern was for the welfare of its employees, the energy saving costs of the evaporative system was a major factor in the company’s decision.
Marie Wren, M.D., Clean Air Group
Integrating HVAC technologies is a particular skill of our design engineers. At Tunstall, for example, the Mitsubishi Multi Heat Recovery VRF system offered a simple and efficient solution to alternating heating and cooling to maintain a consistently comfortable workplace.
It was the Clean Air website that piqued the interest of Tunstall. They invited us to design and quote for a new system to replace their seven ageing Hamworthy LPG boilers, which provided heating for offices and part of the production area.
Our solution comprised four of the latest energy efficient Hamworthy fully modulating condensing pre-mix boilers, stacked in pairs to save space. Featuring low water content, rapid response, and ultra low standing losses, the units delivered European Class 5 performance for NOx emissions.
A new ‘low loss’ flue header system specifically optimized for condensing and high efficiency boiler applications was matched to the boiler modules. We rounded things off by fitting a new shunt pump and a system-integrated control panel. The result was an easily controlled heating system with outstanding performance efficiency.
Tunstall was so pleased with our work that we were asked to quote for replacing some rooftop packaged air-handling units that provided cooling and heating to part of the production area, and for rationalizing the design to include additional cooling to the remaining production areas.
Clean has the experience to consider the bigger picture when it comes to balancing the needs required to heat and cool your premises. It helps that we are an independent business able to recommend what is right for you, not us.
Our HVAC engineers know the technologies that work well together, or can achieve the brief in their own right.
We recommended ten Mitsubishi twin split air-conditioning systems using inverter technology to match output to the exact requirement of the premises. The units save energy by preventing over-heating or over-cooling, leading to a great reduction in running costs.
Following this success, we were invited back to design a heating and cooling system for additional offices that were being refurbished. This time our solution was a Mitsubishi Electric City Multi Heat Recovery VRF system, comprising numerous indoor fan coils connected to high-efficiency outdoor condensing units — a simple, efficient and flexible answer to the need to alternate heating and cooling in order to maintain a constant and comfortable working environment.
Finally, Clean Air was asked to look at Tunstall’s canteen, a very large space that got extremely hot in the summer. High power cooling was a necessity, but another priority was for fresh air. We installed two Cool Breeze QAD230 evaporative cooling units, complete with ducting and grilles strategically placed to deliver cooling exactly where required. Cool filtered fresh air is drawn through the canteen, constantly replacing stale heated air which is expelled through roof vents. The result is a comfortable place to eat or work, however hot the sun.
The Tunstall projects allowed us to showcase the breadth of our expertise, as well as the very best of HVAC design. Effective, efficient and completed over just three months, our solutions have proved a tremendous success. And the Clean Air engineers have become trusted partners to the Tunstall team.
Founded in 1934, Russell Finex is a world leader in the design and manufacture of high quality sieving, filtration and separation equipment. It’s a busy complex, with a variety of buildings all in need of effective HVAC.
The best introduction to this case study is probably a testimonial from the client themselves.
We had a good feeling from the start. Clean Air were knowledgable, informative and highly competitive. Their installations followed the same pattern – neat, tidy and expert. Any alterations or tight deadlines were met without fuss or bother. Our staff now have a comfortable workplace and are much happier. This can only be a good for productivity and efficiency.
Health, Safety and Facilities Officer, Russell Finex Ltd.
The partnership with Clean Air began in 2011 when Russell Finex were on the look out for a new HVAC company to bring some much needed cooling to their offices.
The existing air conditioning system at Russell Finex was unreliable and ineffective. A site survey followed and the design – involving twenty two assorted Mitsubishi air con units – quickly installed. It was a great success. Of particular benefit is the ability to heat as well as cool – this a vital support to inadequate existing heating.
The following years saw six more Mitsubishi units installed. One each to the HR and accounts offices, one to the mesh room and three more in the electrical department. The installations were quick and hassle free and, most importantly, the systems performed just as promised.
The opportunity to prove the value of evaporative cooling came with a trial installation of a Cool Breeze QAD230 unit to the metal polishing shop. Not just highly effective, it also proved incredibly cheap to run and inexpensive to install. Having proven that they could answer the needs of the most challenging of environments, Clean Air were asked to look at the factory itself – a large fabrication and assembly area where effective cooling is key to a happy, productive workplace. Could Clean Air succeed where others had failed? Indeed! This time the design solution proved the biggest success of all.
Involving five QAD230 evap cooling units with extract fans, the system performed faultlessly during a summer of record high temperatures. An early season deal was the icing on the cake. And the results? They were so good that soon the mesh bonding shop asked for the same in their area – duly installed later that year.
Pleased with the outstanding success in cooling, Russell Finex now asked Clean Air to turn their attention to heating. Beginning with the stores and then the mesh making facility. The solutions? First two Benson OUH70 oil heaters, after that four VRA 42/72 gas heaters. These supported by six R2500 destratification fans recirculating warm air back to the factory floor. A great success, both systems proving powerful, robust and energy efficient.
With the four seasons covered, Clean Air are proving the perfect partner in HVAC.
Clean Air have quickly became a vital part of our team and always give us the confidence to know they’ll do a grand job.
Health, Safety and Facilities Officer, Russell Finex Ltd.
Founded in 1989, Surface Technology International is a leading global Electronic Solutions Provider that specialises in contract electronics design and manufacturing. A newly refurbished factory in Hampshire needed an HVAC solution, one that would provide a comfortable working environment all year around.
Heating, Cooling and Ventilation – all three were a necessity to provide a comfortable working environment at Surface Technology International (STI) new factory. This is not uncommon, indeed the skill in integrating such technologies is what sits Clean Air apart from other HVAC companies. Less often is involvement of air conditioning, evaporative cooling, ventilation and commercial boilers in the mix.
A number of HVAC companies had been considered for the task, but a visit to our stand at the Southern Electronic Manufacturing Show was enough to help STI decide Clean Air were the front runners to move the project forward.
Impressed by the obvious knowledge and expertise of the Clean Air staff, STI visited aircraft ejector seat manufacturer Martin Baker to see an example of our work ‘at work’.
Clean Air set the bar for other contractors, it’s a hard act to follow
Aaron Leaves, Facilities Manager, Surface Technology
The decision was immediate, Clean Air began design and feasibility studies in earnest.
High efficiency, inverter powered Mitsubishi air conditioning units served ducts to the mezzanine area and then, using larger ducts, via air socks, the canteen. Wall mounted air conditioning units served the facilities and dispatch offices. The main production area was cooled by fresh, filtered air from a number of low energy, but incredibly powerful, Cool Breeze QAD230 evaporative cooling units. Heating for the main production area was from highly efficient and reliable Winterwarm industrial heaters, along with a Honeywell energy efficient boiler supply. Extract ventilation was then installed to the showers and washrooms.
The project was expertly installed and commissioned with speed and remarkably little disruption. The results are proving the HVAC system an outstanding success. Workers enjoy a consistently comfortable workplace and the accountants are pleasantly surprised by just how low the running costs are. So much so that Clean Air have been invited to look at replacing the HVAC in three other factories that STI operate.
As Aaron Leaves, Facilities Manager, concluded:
At every stage, from design to quotation and delivery, Clean Air deliver, and in bundles. There is no question, Clean Air are our preferred HVAC partner as we move forward with our UK operations
Beaumanor Engineering, founded in 1974, is a manufacturer of brass turned parts used in fluid transfer. Their UK manufacturing base in Leicester required a cooling and heating solution for year around comfort.
Beaumanor Engineering premises occupies 30,000 square feet and stocks more than 35,000 items. The brief for CleanAir was to install an air conditioning system in the offices to provide heating and cooling. The company had previously relied on a single portable unit which was neither efficient nor cost effective and was proving to be a problem for the staff who worked there.
This was a straightforward installation of two wall mounted units and a ceiling cassette from the M series range and the perfect way to ensure a comfortable environment with the minimum amount of disruption. The additional benefit was the availability of immediate funding through MELFinance Solutions.
Ben Hallett, Clean Air Group
We now have a very efficient HVAC solution which provides the right levels of heating and cooling for the space. In fact, the staff are extremely pleased with the results, as the office feels like a much better environment to work within
Paul McGreevy, Finance Director, Beaumanor Engineering
Beaumanor Engineering also utilised the services offered by Mitsubishi MELFinance at their UK base in Leicester.
As gas and electricity prices continue to trend upwards, more and more companies are making the decision to install new, energy efficient technology to reduce running costs.
We do have access to finance through our own bank but the solution offered by Mitsubishi Electric MELFinance was far more attractive and allowed us to upgrade our HVAC system in a shorter timescale than we had originally expected.
Paul McGreevy, Finance Director, Beaumanor Engineering
The option to use finance to remove capital outlay, but still benefit from a quick return on investment and an improved working environment, is very attractive. In the majority of cases, the interest is cleared by the energy savings of new equipment. It is a win-win.

Dumpton Park Nissan Car Dealership required a comfortable environment for their staff and customers at their premises. The solution, utilising Mitsubishi air conditioning and MELFinace provides efficient cooling and heating without tying up working capital.
A Broadstairs car dealership is enjoying the benefits of an upgrade in their air conditioning systems thanks to a unique finance package that gives businesses an additional route to funding for building services and plant.
Dumpton Park Nissan car dealership was in need of a brand new air conditioning system but the initial capital outlay was proving to be a barrier. That was until they considered funding the two projects through MELFinance Solutions.
Mitsubishi Electric developed MELFinance Solutions to respond to current market conditions and the need for customers to manage cash flow, while benefitting from the installation of new technology to reduce carbon emissions and operational costs.
Dumpton Park Nissan car dealership took advantage of MELFinance Solutions to fund their new air conditioning system costing c. £20,000.
This is a classic example of the benefits of this finance package. The entire space had previously utilised an oil fired boiler system which was proving to be very costly to run. Our client knew that a brand new system would be far more cost effective in the long term but, rather than use their own capital, MELFinance was an attractive way to fund the replacement. They now have their new system installed using a range of ceiling cassettes from the Mitsubishi Electric Mr Slim range. These provide heating and cooling throughout the main showroom and sales offices and are already showing significant improvements in comfort levels for employees and customers.
